Studies

One research institute, two universities

Most of the research performed at the RIME is accomplished through the training of graduate students. All RIME students are admitted into graduate programs through UQAT or Polytechnique Montréal. The unique partnership between these two universities offers students the opportunity to pursue their education in various programs offered at one or the other university. Depending on their interests, students can choose the curriculum that best suits their needs. Since its creation in 2013, the RIME has graduated over 100 students.

Master’s Degree

Admission requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a relevant discipline with a minimum GPA of 2.75/4.0, 3.0/4.3, B (70%), or 7/10.

An applicant may request an exemption from this requirement by submitting supporting documentation that demonstrates their ability to succeed in graduate-level studies (e.g., relevant professional experience, further studies undertaken after earning their undergraduate degree).

Profiles

Professional Master’s program :

The professional profile allows students to deepen their knowledge related to the mining industry through specialized training. Four concentrations are offered: Mining Geology, Geomechanics, Applied Geophysics, and Environmental Hydrogeology, enabling students to develop expertise in a specific area. The majority of the program is dedicated to coursework, while the remaining portion allows the student to either complete an internship or carry out a short research project.

Research Master’s program :

The research profile emphasizes a scientific approach by deepening the student’s knowledge and developing a critical perspective within their chosen specialization, selected from one of the four concentrations: Mining Geology, Geomechanics, Applied Geophysics, and Environmental Hydrogeology. Two-thirds of the program is dedicated to conducting a research project, while the remaining third involves coursework, generally related to the research field. The work is carried out under the supervision of a research advisor. The student must submit a research thesis.

Supervision

For the professional master’s program, it is not necessary to find a supervisor before submitting your application. A supervisor will be assigned to you upon admission. However, if you plan to carry out a small research project during your studies, it is recommended to contact a professor in your area of interest to coordinate the necessary coursework for your project.

For the research master’s program, it is recommended to contact a professor whose research focus aligns with your interests, as their support is required for your admission. To identify a potential research supervisor, consult the “Research” section to learn more about each professor’s research areas, or review the list of available projects.

Phd

The objective of the PhD program is to train scientists capable of building bridges across disciplines, deepening their expertise in a specialized field, and pushing the boundaries of knowledge. Students will develop the ability to critically understand and evaluate scientific literature, and master rigorous methods of reasoning and experimentation. They evolve within a dynamic, multidisciplinary research environment, working alongside a team of internationally recognized professors. The standard duration of the doctoral program is 12 full-time terms, and the research is carried out under the supervision of a research advisor.

It is recommended to contact the professor whose research focus interests you, as they must support your application for admission. To identify a research supervisor, consult the “Our team” section to learn about the research areas of each of our professors.

Admission requirements

Applicants must hold a professional master’s degree, research master’s degree, or a master’s degree in engineering, science, or a relevant discipline with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, 3.0/4.3, B+ (75%), or 7.5/10.

Exceptionally, candidates who demonstrate strong potential but whose academic background does not fully meet the admission requirements for the intended program may be admitted to a preparatory graduate studies program upon recommendation from the supervisor or research director. For more information, please refer to Article 5.4 of the General Regulations for Graduate Studies.

PostdocTORAL

The IRME welcomes postdoctoral fellows who wish to expand their knowledge and apply their expertise. Please contact the professor directly or consult the list of available positions.

funding

Some research projects offer financial support. Contact the professor supervising your studies or research work to find out if financial assistance is available. If you have a scholarship, be sure to mention it.

There are also other organizations that provide scholarships to graduate students (Master’s and PhD levels).
