Présentation :
Evolving kinetic testing methods to address risk for site-specific,
sustainable closure planning

By : Jared Robertson, O’Kane Consultants
Traditional kinetic leach testing methods, such as humidity cell testing and AMIRA columns, are accepted industry standard methods for evaluating the kinetic geochemistry of potential waste rock material and for assessing the potential for acid rock drainage (ARD) in the construction of waste rock dumps (WRD). Because these methods are standardized, site-specific parameters that influence ARD from a WRD, including particle size distribution, liquid-to-solid ratio, temperature, and gas concentration and flux, are not captured in the testing method, resulting in the use of scaling factors in order to predict mine site drainage. These scaling factors add uncertainty and risk to potential engineering decisions that use the data. A new kinetic column testing method using the advanced customizable leach columns (ACLC) is being developed to address these uncertainties. The ACLC method can control site-specific parameters such as air flow rates, ambient temperatures, water application, and pore gas composition with the ability to customize each column. Operating the ACLCs using site-specific conditions decreases the reliance on scaling factors. The laboratory data obtained from the ACLCs can then be used to inform engineering decisions with a higher degree of certainty. Case studies with the ACLCs will be presented with a science and engineering lens.
