RIME : A brief history

Issues related to « Mines and the Environment » have strongly oriented the development of research in mining at UQAT and Polytechnique Montreal.  Strengthened by a partnership that has existed for about thirty years, UQAT and Polytechnique have combined their expertise by collaborating on different training and research projects, particularly since 2001 with the creation of the Industrial NSERC Polytechnique-UQAT Chair on Environment and Mine Wastes Management. Operated from 2001 to 2012,this joint research Chair was created in collaboration with the federal and provincial governments, various mining companies and consulting firms. Its research program focused on the development of tools and geo-environmental techniques for an integrated management of liquid and solid mine wastes, including waste rocks from the operation, tailings from mineral processing, and water treatment sludge. The research program was developed with the Chair’s partners to find solutions to various environmental problems faced by the mining companies.

In May 2013, UQAT and Polytechnique Montreal launched a joint research program, unique in Quebec : the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME) UQAT-Polytechnique.  This program, which spans over seven years (2012 to 2019), relies on an industrial financial support of $9.45M provided by mining partners:  Agnico Eagle, Osisko Mining Corporation, Glencore Raglan Mine, IAMGOLD Corporation, and Rio Tinto Fer et Titane inc.

This innovative partnership supports a leading edge research program that addresses needs from industry, governmental agencies and society in general, as well as the training of highly qualified personnel.

The inauguration of RIME UQAT-Polytechnique took place at the UQAT campus in Rouyn-Noranda, on April 24, 2013, with partners in attendance.
